Conference Overview
Giving Back: to our
colleagues, our patients and ourselves
This program will
feature practitioners who are primary practitioners for head and neck cancer,
and AAMP members sharing experiences in rehabilitation of the cancer patient
using endosteal implant therapy. This includes patients who have also had
microvascular reconstructions of the maxilla and mandible. There will be a
unique experience for all delegates to demonstrate various techniques and
research in maxillofacial prosthetics during a dedicated morning session of
table clinics and poster presentations. All delegates are extended an
invitation to bring select casts, models, materials, and innovations to share
during this time. A hands-on interchange between members during this forum may
offer just the subtle nuance required to meet a difficult patient need: the
more experienced the practitioner, the more potential to bring forward this
information. It is an opportunity for all to "give back" to the Academy.
Since 1988, AboutFace has offered education and
opportunity to those who have facial differences, the friends who love them,
and the practitioners who care for them. This international organization has
developed tested education methods and communication tools for successful
interaction of all involved. Representatives from AboutFace will share
knowledge obtained from patients, personal interviews and research projects
conducted by the organization. They will speak during the main session and
conduct a small group breakout session. Delegates will receive the
organization’s published materials. As maxillofacial prosthodontists, we have
accepted a calling to offer our services to persons with facial differences
from all walks of life.
Finally, given the physically and mentally taxing
profession of maxillofacial prosthetics and prosthodontics, it is not uncommon
to have physical maladies arise in the neck, back, shoulders, and spine. These
maladies begin with local muscle spasms, edema, and ischemia, advancing to
carpel tunnel syndrome, nerve compression in the fingers and hands from
cervical disc displacements, and even herniated discs of the cervical and
lumbar spine. There is a likelihood for these problems in persons who have
prolonged static postural positions. The longer the insult, the greater the
risk of suffering that can limit or end one’s career. A biophysicist and
exercise physiologist who has developed a 12 step exercise program to limit
these injuries, will discuss the physiology and function of exercise. This
program has recently been accepted by the Navy, for pilots who must sit in
static positions for hours, and suffer the insult of G-forces on the cervical
spine. You will be receiving a questionnaire from the program committee to
gather data on AAMP members’ physical symptoms as they relate to possible
postural injuries. This data will help us develop a presentation to address
the specific needs of our group.

The
Fairmont Chateau Laurier
is a deluxe hotel located eleven miles from Ottawa International Airport, in the
heart of Ottawa. Graced with a blend of French Renaissance and neo-gothic
architecture, the Chateau is a distinctive landmark nestled between the Rideau
Canal and the Parliament Buildings. The Grand Dame of Ottawa, this fairy tale
castle is a favorite place for celebrations. The hotel is easy walking distance
to all the city center attractions, and there are a multitude of restaurants in
the area to choose from. However, guests won’t have to leave the hotel to find
great dining or live entertainment.
The
Fairmont Chateau Laurier
is especially proud of its multiple award-winning restaurant, Wilfrid’s. Live
entertainment is offered on the weekends at the hotel’s elegant lounge, Zoe’s.
This landmark hotel offers a unique and memorable experience for all its guests.
The guest rooms have been beautifully renovated and they are in keeping with the
Fairmont’s reputation for luxurious accommodations.
Ottawa
 Ottawa,
nestled at the junction of three picturesque rivers, is considered one of the
world’s most beautiful capitals. The city borders the province of Québec,
creating a dynamic cultural milieu in which both French and English cultures are
deeply rooted. The result is a truly cosmopolitan experience— a North American
city with a distinctly European charm and flair.
The
seat of Canada’s federal government, Ottawa is a major centre for the visual and
performing arts. Yet the city retains the accessibility, atmosphere and charm of
a smaller centre—rich in green spaces, parks and wilderness areas.
O ttawa
is home to some of Canada’s finest museums, galleries and historical sites.
Stroll the grounds of stately Rideau Hall, official residence of the Queen’s
representative in Canada. See the National Gallery of Canada, a stunning
architectural marvel overlooking the Ottawa River. And don’t miss the historic
Parliament buildings, Canada’s seat of government.
